The goal of cardio-vascular exercise is to get your heart rate up and to increase the flow of oxygen throughout the system. Some examples of great cardio vascular exercise to improve heart health are running, fast walking, bike riding, swimming, and rowing. In addition to getting your heart rate up it is also important for you to sustain that higher rate for a period of time. This means you will want to work yourself up to longer and longer periods of sustained, increased heart rate over time. For example, if you decide to give running a try, you will want to start with a short distance to begin with, perhaps one mile or so at most to begin with. As your heart health improves and you begin to become accustomed to getting your heart rate up, you will want to make the distance traveled, and in turn the length of time at a sustained and increased heart rate, longer each time you run.
