Ginseng has been used in Asia for thousands of years. It is considered an important element by the Chinese in most cures. At one time it was more valuable than gold or other precious stones. Today, it is one of the most popular herbs, used for its curative properties. Although, Ginseng's medicinal purposes are only recognized in the American and Asian Panax form.
Ginseng's root is the part that is primarily used. The herb can be used in a variety of forms, including: dried, liquid, powder or in a capsule. The capsule component is the most commonly available and offers a consistent level of Ginseng compounds. Some people have been known to consume Ginseng in a tonic form to combat ailments such as arthritis.
There are three kinds of Ginseng that are normally used. Korean/Chinese Ginseng is the most widely used. This type of Ginseng is found throughout the countries of Asia. American Ginseng is found in higher altitudes and in wooded areas. This form of Ginseng prefers direct sunlight or partial shade and is usually found in the provinces of Canada and northern United States. Siberian Ginseng is grown in the forests of Russia and is preferred because of its decreased side effects.
What are some of the benefits of using Ginseng? A number of studies have shown that Ginseng can help lower cholesterol and increase energy and endurance. Ginseng can also prevent infections as well as reduce fatigue and signs of stress. It is important to note that a person may not immediately notice the benefits of Ginseng when he or she begins taking it as a dietary supplement. Ginseng may take several weeks or even months before showing beneficial signs in the body.
Can anyone take Ginseng? As with any other specialty product, Ginseng is not recommended for everyone. The most common side effects are nervousness and fatigue. Some people who have used the product have complained of diarrhea, skin rash and anxiety. Side effects may dissipate after a few days. However, if symptoms persist, a person should quit taking the product and/or consult a physician. Doctors also recommend that a person who is pregnant or is suffering from high blood pressure or diabetes should not use the product as side effects are unknown. Some researchers have advised people not to use Ginseng on a continuous basis. Some experts recommend using the product in a cycle of one month and discontinuing intake for two months.
Ginseng is known as a dietary supplement that can be used to combat a number of the body's condition. With any specialty product, moderation and caution should be used.
