There are two types of herpes the first type is known as HSV-1 that is can cause cold sores on or in the mouth. The second type of herpes is HSV-2 this the sexually transmitted disease. The disease can not live outside of the body for long, therefore it can not be caught by sitting on a toilet seat.
If you have sex with an infected person that carries the HSV-2 virus you may be infected but never have a break out. If you are infected the sore can take up to two to twenty days to show up. First they will appear like little red bumps on your vaginal or penis and then with in days they will burst and fluid will seep out. This is very painful when trying to urinate. The first out break is always the worst ones, the next out break will be less severe. You can be infected through any sexually contact, for example intercourse, anal sex, and oral sex can result in catching this virus.
You will notice itching and pain and perhaps flu like symptoms if you have been effected and this can last up to four weeks in duration. There is NO cure for this disease. After your first out break you might be inclined to think that the virus is gone, however it is not and it can reappear, and with it the sore will reappear. The virus hides in your system waiting to reappear. If you you have unprotected sex during this time ( of no sores) you could be infecting your sexual partaner. Most cases of sexually transmitted genital herpes are transmitted when there are no symptoms present. This means that you should not have unprotected sex at ANYTIME if you carry the Herpes virus. The best way to prevent getting this virus is to not have sex. If a pregnant women has a herpes out break while pregnant she is likely to infect her unborn child with Herpes. A doctor can not get rid of the virus but can prescribe you a medicine that will take away the sores.
